What We Fund

kid and dad playing ballActive Living Research supports research examining how environments and policies impact physical activity, especially among ethnic minorities and children living in low-income communities. Findings inform environmental and policy changes that promote active living among children and families.

We encourage experts in fields such as public health, public administration, law, economics, transportation, medicine, recreation, urban planning, architecture, the behavioral sciences, child care and education to work together to identify promising approaches for increasing physical activity and preventing obesity among children and families.

Through extensive consultation with experts in multiple fields, Active Living Research and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) staff and advisors have identified priority areas for each round of funding. These high-priority topics are described in call for proposals, and priorities have evolved from year to year.

Active Living Research does not fund any physical activity interventions or educational outreach programs. However, we are committed to funding rigorous evaluations of environmental or policy-related interventions or changes that may influence physical activity.

Past calls for proposals have produced numerous research projects on a variety of topics, with many projects currently in progress.
