Increasing Physical Activity Through Innovative Stair Design: Evaluating Skip-Stop Elevators Combined with Spacious Stairs
Ongoing research is beginning to show that integrating physical activity into our daily routines is an effective means of improving people’s health. The team at Georgia Institute of Technology is studying the elevator and stair design of a 2100-person state office building. This building has the innovative feature of a “skip-stop” elevator and stair design. The elevator in this design stops only on every fourth floor from which able-bodied users will use open stairs to access other floors above or below the stop. The researchers will discover if there is a difference in stair use between the building with the skip-stop feature and a building with a traditional elevator system that stops on every floor. Each volunteer in the study will record their daily step counts and complete a physical activity questionnaire at the end of each observation period. Objective data collection on stair use will be gathered using Smartmat technology.
