ALR provided recommendations that helped inform the national Childhood Obesity Task Force action plan, Solving the Problem of Childhood Obesity Within a Generation. The task force, part of the First Lady’s Let’s Move campaign, offers goals, benchmarks, and measureable outcomes that will help the country tackle the childhood obesity epidemic one child, one family, and one community at a time. ALR’s recommendations focused on increasing children’s physical activity through quality physical education, recess, and other opportunities in and after school; improving the “built environment” so it is safer for children to walk or bike in their communities; and improving access to safe parks, playgrounds, and indoor and outdoor recreational facilities.
